The Giving Season

As the cooler weather starts to roll in, we begin to think of the holidays ahead. We think of snuggling up by a fire, wearing warm and comfy clothing, eating delicious baked goodies and spending time with family and friends. We also tend to remember those who are not as fortunate as we are. We try to consider how we can help those in need, and we get an overwhelming feeling of joy when we are able to contribute. The holidays have become the giving season – a time to share our good fortune with others so that they too can have a magical holiday season.

During this time, many parents reflect over the simple joys that they have practiced in years past and share those with their loved ones. Stories and traditions are told about special gifts that were given to help others in need. Many times family members and friends are so touched by hearing the enthusiasm of the story teller that they too want to experience that same wonderful feeling that only comes from giving.

Family traditions are richest when the family is able to experience them together. This year, make it a tradition in your home to help. No matter how large or small your contribution, you will be making a difference for someone less fortunate. It is a sincere, selfless act of kindness that generates a warm feeling inside each heart.

Here are some of the ways you and your family can make this holiday season brighter for those less fortunate:

  • Provide a warm blanket or winter coat for someone in need.
  • Visit with someone in a nursing home who could use a little holiday joy
  • Sing Christmas carols to those who are bedridden
  • Provide Christmas gifts for children in need
  • Give a turkey, ham or Christmas fixings to those who cannot afford it
  • Provide an opportunity for someone underprivileged to experience the enchantment of the holidays, such as tickets to a Christmas concert, play or other special event
  • Donate to an organization that serves one of the less fortunate groups of our society so that they can continue to aid the helpless citizens of our community throughout the year.

Within our own community, there are many people who will not be able to share in the gaiety of the season. By working together, we can make the most out of this giving season and ensure that many of these less fortunate individuals have the chance to experience the magic of the holidays.
