Hanabi Sushi
What is more tantalizing than food that is both beautiful and scrumptious? Japanese food, particularly sushi, is as pleasing to the eye as to the palate. Now a gem in the City of Duluth has brought this to the community in a big way. Though the restaurant is small, your pleasure won’t be. With simple, comfortable, calming décor the tone is set to allow the dining experience to be the center of your attention.
Jeung and Hui Kwon relocated to Duluth from McLean, Virginia and we’re so lucky that they did. The hard-working husband and wife team prepare each dish with special care. You can begin with edamamecooked soy beansthat are so fresh one bowl is never enough. If you’re in the mood, you can wait for your main course while you enjoy either a fresh salad with ginger dressing or savory miso soup.
There are so many kinds of sushi and sashimi to try that after months of weekly visits, I only have a portion of the menu yet to be sampled. For those who prefer teriyaki or udon (noodle dish), there are many choices that will be brought to the table steaming and so tasty.
Viewing the fresh fish at the sushi bar makes it difficult to narrow down your selection. It’s all so appealing. After a few visits, you’ll certainly have your personal favorites, but be sure to try something new each time so you don’t miss any of the great tastes. The spicy tuna roll quickly became a preferred item for me at each visit. The chopped tuna, seasoned just right, wrapped in fresh nori and rice then rolled in masago wakes up your appetite. The flavor of the Rainbow Roll (plain or spicy) blending salmon with tuna, avocado, ginger and seasonings is complemented by a presentation full of beautiful colors with fresh tuna, shrimp and salmon.
Some in your party may not be ready for all raw fish, so be sure to try some of the cooked specialty rolls. It’s hard to pick a favorite but the Hanabi and Fufu rolls compete for first place. They are blends of shrimp, salmon or scallops, cooked with a very special sauce, brought to you with a mouth-watering browned top brimming with enormous flavor. Vegetables at every meal are another delightful taste treat. There are simple but yummy rolls with cucumber or shitake mushrooms, asparagus or other fresh choices. It is worth adventuring into some of the more creative selections and you will probably end up devouring every bite of the vegetable tempura roll.
At a recent dinner, our magnificently arranged platter included a roll that was new to us. The first bite put it high on our list of must haves it was called a Super Crunchy Roll and the blend of shrimp with avocado baked to perfection left us anxious for our next visit. You’ll find the prices in a mid range and the atmosphere casual.
