Taking it to the Street with Neighborhood Pride!

There will be more than tulips blooming this spring when Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful takes their mission to the streets and launches The Great Neighborhood Cleanup. This exciting new community initiative is designed to help citizens learn more about how they can personally “Take Pride in Gwinnett.”

On Saturday, April 28, hundreds of volunteers will engage in two key community clean-up projects in the Norcross and Lawrenceville areas where graffiti, litter, and illegal dumping have scarred the landscape and become a chronic challenge. It is a proven fact that when neighbors are ambivalent to destruction and decay in their communities, they will soon be faced with even more serious challenges of vandalism, environmental destruction, and increased criminal activity.

Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful has identified specific areas of blight along Mitchell Street in Norcross and Oakland Road in Lawrenceville where immediate action is needed. On April 28th homeowners, renters, business and community leaders, families, community service clubs, scout troops and more will rally together to beautify the spaces along these roads. Citizens will volunteer side-by-side to pick up trash, paint out graffiti, prune the landscape, mend worn structures, apply fresh coats of paint on weathered fences and more.

“The vision for The Great Neighborhood Cleanup is modeled after Keep America Beautiful’s national Great American Cleanup program. The goal is to engage more citizen volunteers and offer strategic support to neighborhoods throughout our community that need focused attention,” explains Connie Wiggins, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Executive Director. “We will work to build a model program that educates and inspires citizens in Gwinnett to care for their neighborhoods year-round.”

This year’s event will use these two key project sites to formulate the footprint for this strategic community initiative in future years. Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful has a proven track record of serving as a catalyst to bring about real change, having made a positive impact throughout Gwinnett for nearly three decades. In the months to come, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful will be designing Neighborhood Cleanup Tool Kits that will make year-round clean-up and neighborhood restoration doable for volunteers at all skill levels. There are great plans in the works!
